The  Earthbound Farm’s Farm Stand in Carmel Valley has an amazing collection of pumpkin varieties for sale every year. This is one of the beautifully colored Cinderella Pumpkins… It’s right out of the movie. (Click on the comment bubble to leave a comment.)

The Piazza Structure

Marty CohenB+W, California Academy of Sciences, Daily Photo1 Comment

Yesterday, I posted a photograph of the Living Roof of the California Academy of Sciences. The roof is an integral part in the Academy’s cooling and ventilation system. The Piazza contributes to this passive cooling system since cool air “drains” down the slope of the Living Roof in the evening. At the center of the building there is a piazza that has a glass roof. That roof will open at night and the cool air will drain into the Piazza. To cool the building, they open windows at the base of the Piazza so the cool air flows into the building causing the warm air to rise and circulate out the open port holes in the Living Roof (see yesterday’s Post and watch the video). A very clever and efficient system and the building needs no mechanical air conditioning system.

The Living Roof is an integral part of the California Academy of Sciences. This fascinating 197,000 square-foot rooftop is home to a number of native plant species. There were many challenges in building the roof and it provides far more than a covering for the Academy of Sciences. It’s an important ecological project, a learning laboratory about native plant life, it provides cooling for the interior of the building through its unique design and the unique design of the building, and much more. To learn more about how it was designed, built and what its many functions are, watch the short movie below. It’s fascinating. The photo also pays special recognition to my Alma Mater, UCSF, which you can see on the far right edge of the photo in the distance.
