Hosomaki Sushi (“thin rolls”) are small cylindrical pieces, with nori (seaweed) on the outside. They generally contain only one filling, often tuna (Tekkamaki), Kanpyō, cucumber (Kappamaki), thinly sliced carrots (as in the image above), and, occasionally, avocado. I’ll post a future photograph that will show some of these are types of Hosomaki Sushi. Please be sure to click on the photo to enlarge it and see more detail.
The photo was taken with a Canon EOS 40D, EF17-40mm f/4L lens, 1/60 sec at f/4, ISO 250 with bounce flash lighting.

Marty,
I love the reflection in the knife as much as I like the shapes. Beautiful photo, but it makes me hungry!
Laurie
Thanks Laurie. The reflection is one of my favorite parts of this image.
Brilliant! What was the background? And seriously: who locally is giving lessons in sushi and such, because I’d love to sign up! Your photography inspires! Happy New Year, Laurie
Thank you Laurie. The background was an orange cutting board. I don’t know anyone locally who teaches this. We go to LA every New Years to do this with Cathleen’s cousins primarily. Actually, what we plan to do is create a book with the photos I’ve taken and the recipes and instructions written by the family. I hope we can get together soon.
Yum!
beautiful photo and like cathleen I like the shapes…the knife blade, the rolled rice, the carrot…triangle, circle , square. This is one of my favorite combinations of shapes. Have you seen my tcs rock collection? will send
Thank you. I looked at the TCS rock collection photo you sent and I see what you mean. Not only did I like the rocks, but the card was beautiful and i loved the design of the card.
Beautiful composition with interesting shapes . . . love the horizontal lines, and the square and round shapes in the sushi roll. Like the reflection in knife and the beautiful orange-red colors.
Thank you. I really love this photo.
