Hiding in the Savanna Grass

A Baby Cheetah Hiding in the Savanna Grass

In Kenya, we saw quite a few Cheetah, including some families with very young cubs. The savanna’s tall grass provides excellent cover for young Cheetahs as the color of their fur and their spots blend well with the grass to provide good camouflage for them. In the case of this young Cheetah, our Land Cruiser almost ran over it because it was so well hidden.

The photo was taken with a Canon EOS 40D, EF70-200mm f/4L IS lens + 1.4x tele-extender, 1/160 sec at f/10, ISO 400 on SanDisk Extreme IV Digital Film.

  1. Great shot Marty.

Weren’t you afraid that it’s mother was lurking in the grass nearby, about to attack you?

    1. Thanks Martin.
We were concerned about the danger for only a couple of days, then we became comfortable. As long as we stayed in the Land Cruiser, and the driver was paying attention to the bull elephants (not getting to close to them), we were actually pretty safe.

  2. I remember this beautiful guy and how close he was! Pictures like this always make me marvel at the wonders of science…the blend of fantastic colors and shades. Also makes me think of the legends of how the cheetah got its beautiful “tears.”
