Sunrise at Sweetwaters, Kenya

Sunrise at Sweetwaters, Kenya

This image was taken in Sweetwaters, Kenya on the Masai Mara. It was about 15 minutes before the actual sunrise and during that magical time of light in the early dawn. I used my previous camera, a Canon 40D with a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS lens. If you like this image, please share it.

  1. Very dramatic from a distance, very subtle color gradations from closer up. It could be almost anywhere but that lone tree says “Africa.” Beautiful.

  2. Do you remember how it looked and felt in person? Must have been breath-taking, capturing those few quiet, transitional moments before sunrise.

    1. I do remember how it felt, but it was a struggle between feeling the beauty of sunrise and fear as, just moments before this shot, I dropped my camera trying to get it on this horrible “travel tripod” I had purchased for that trip in 2009. I know you recall this story and how my telephoto lens broke into two pieces. I tried putting it back together and looked through and it seemed to be working. I took this shot holding the two together. So I guess I was in shock and either really upset or relieved it still worked. Either way, this sunrise was beautiful and 19 minutes later, it produced my favorite photo from the whole trip, which you can see at THIS LINK.
